Brief Program Description

keepin’ it REAL (kiR) High School is an online web-based program, scientifically proven and effective substance use prevention program designed to focus on the information and competencies linked to preventing substance use and abuse.

kiR High School is an evidence-based program designed to prevent alcohol and other drug related harm among high school students.

Funding for the development of keepin’ it REAL High School originally came from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Specific Outcomes

Evaluation studies demonstrate:

  • Greater improvements in skills to resist drug offers
  • More accurate perceptions that friends view drug use as unacceptable
  • Decreased intentions to use alcohol and cigarettes in the next 30 days
  • Reductions in past month alcohol use

Audience Size: Minimum 1, no Maximum
# of Lessons: 7 (with optional student athlete lesson)
Length of Sessions: self-directed, online, range from 10 to 45 minutes
Frequency of Implementation: self-directed, recommended one lesson per day or week

How it Works

Keepin’ it REAL High School is a web-based program.Optimal delivery is for student individual use in class or as an assignment. (A teacher-led option is also available.)

The kiR High School Core Program consists of seven lessons:

  • Consequences
  • Under Pressure
  • Forward to the Future
  • Final Knowledge Check
  • Optional Student-Athlete Lesson(forthcoming)

Required Materials

  • Access code to online program
  • Access code obtained through REAL Prevention
  • Optional: Introduction and conclusion instructor materials


  • Individual student license: $5.00
  • Teacher only license: $1,500 annual license


Video Conference Training: $800 1-Day On-site Training: $2,000 plus travel Min/Max Number of training participants: Video Conference: Minimum 1; Maximum 2 On-site: Minimum 3; Maximum 35
